The effect of e-mail on people's communication skills

E-mail has given us more freedom to communicate. We “talk”, to people that we have not seen in years, and might not even be able to carry on a face to face conversation with. It has also made people lazy. We send one to the person in the next cubical instead of getting up and talking to them. As in the second sentence of this paragraph the over use of quotes can be attributed to e-mail use. People even uses air quotes with their fingers to make a point, and they are not even used for their original purpose.

E-mail has given way to less face to face interaction in the workplace. One such example of this is in my mother’s workplace. Her boss would rather she ask questions via e-mail, instead of walking across the hall to ask him face to face. A question that would take less than a minute to answer, could take all day because they have to wait for the answer. If the answer is not clear then another is bounced back and forth until they answer is clear.

Sometimes e-mails can be misunderstood because there is a lack of tone in the written word. People will take things the wrong way because people write short and to the point. Instead of elaborating say what they mean and it can seem a little harsh. If you look back at letter writing, you will see how it was a true art form. This has been lost to the present generation because of the overuse of e-mail. Some e-mail etiquette sites even say to be short and to the point and that it is not a spoken conversation. If you look at an e-mail as this you will not really be able to communicate as well as if you take your time to get your point across with more information it is needed.

Junk e-mails can be anything from poems to a new form of urban legend. People really waste their own time and the people that they send it to by forwarding junk mail. This has become such a problem that companies have implemented policies to ban the practice. Take a look at your inbox and see how many junk e-mails that you receive in a twenty-four hour period. This is not Spam but mail that is forwarded to you someone that you know.

Spam is one of the worse things that have come because of e-mail. When you sign up on website beware, you e-mail address is more than likely going to be sold to another company and you will be spammed. Looking in my spam folder in less than two hours I had thirty spam e-mails. You have to look through them just to make sure that regular one has not slipped though. There are ways to avoid spam by using a disposable e-mail address that can be deleted if it starts getting a lot of spam. These types of e-mail addresses are available through most services.

People’s communication skills have really slipped back to high school when everything had an acronym. This has led to poor grammar because people use more slang. Some of the most commonly used acronyms are, Laugh Out Loud (LOL), Be Right Back (BRB), For Your Information (FYI), and By The Way (BTW). It can be very annoying if you do not know the meaning of the acronym that is being used. If we learn to look at e-mails as just another way to write a letter and get back to using proper grammar and etiquette instead of acronym and smilies [ :-) ] we would be better understood.

Bad spelling has become rampant because people have come to depend on spell check too much instead of making sure that they are spelling something correctly. Sometimes the errors remain in the e-mail because the word is not spelled wrong but the wrong spelling has been use. This is the case with homonyms and is a growing problem. People depend on spell check so much that they do not proofread the body of the e-mail and just take it for granted that spell check has done it job. What they do not realize is that they are really depending on another person – the person that entered the words into the spell check program.

People are wasting so much time using e-mail to ask simple questions that it could take all day to get a project done. They send one sentence answers back-and-forth countless times, when one phone call would have taken less time. If they would take the time to pick up a phone instead of opening their e-mail program, they would be able to get their job done so much more quickly.

Edited to add: This is an essay that I wrote for my current english class and I though that I would post it here.

New job and much more

I started a new job on Thursday and, so it means early to bed and early to rise and not much more than housework in-between. I have been able to get some crafting done though. I started a crochet blanket for my bed. It is in the round, and I am about 20 inches from side-to-side. I was gifted a full cone of yarn at the Peachtree Handspinner's Guild meeting last Saturday and I came home knowing exactly what I was going to make. The yarn is a mercerized cotton in a creamy color. I really love how it is turning out. I am just using a double crochet stitch with an even increase all around. I just finished a pair of baby booties today with a dark pink cotton and a brown ribbon as the tie. I really need to take some pictures. I feel bad that I have no pictures to go with this post.
On the job subject, I am not working as a Substitute Teacher at my girls school. I love the time that I am there. I have been there most of the school year as a parent volunteer and I really just love knowing that I can be there if my children need me and I can help out where I am needed, and help their teachers.

The Last Day of School

Anastasia's last day of kindergarten is tomorrow, I don't know what to do because my little girls is growing up, and my baby will be starting school next year. I will be alone for the first time in 6 years. I won't know what to do with my self. Last week was Anastasia's kindergarten graduation and I could not help but cry through most of it. I have been the "Room Mom" for the past year and I have become so attached to all of the children in her class and when I think about that I will not see them all every day I know that I am going to miss them all so much.

Here she is with her teachers. We had a Luau party today with Ice Cream Sundaes, and cupcakes. I really am going to miss her teachers also they have become such good friends I know that even if Shae doesn't get in their room next year I will still keep in touch with them and make sure to stop and chat when ever I get a chance.

An Update

I just thought that I would give an update on what has been going on lately.

I feel that I have not been crafting as much as I would like. I have still been making at least 1 to 2 FOs per week but they have been small 30 min to one hour projects.

Today I cut strips for another Log Cabin Pillow, this will be a gift for one of Anastasia's teachers. I am making it in shades of blues and greens. I am trying to figure out what other color I am going to add to give it that touch of flare.

I have a small piece of fabric that was left over from an apron that I made a few months ago, it has blue, green, orange, yellow, & teal with a black background. I will try to get a picture in the morning and update the post with it.

I really hate to write a post without a picture so here is one of the girls and their friend Blake at our Walk For Jesus cleanup event. They decied to give the kids the extra t-shirts and they were so big I might have to re-fashion them to make them down to gowns so that they can at least sleep in them.
I would like to thank you for reading my sometimes boring posts, the class that I am taking now has me at my wits end, and I fell I need to post something so that I don't forget about this place.
Here is a few cool links that I thought you might like.
I hope that you enjoy these links as much as I did.

Can't believe its been so long

I cannot believe that it has been a week between post, but this week has been crazy. My Dad needs surgery but cannot get it until we get his blood sugar down to a better level. So me and my sister have been taking everyother day to check in on him. Today is my day, and I have been fielding phone calls from him and my sister all day.
I have gotten some crafting this week. I can take these small projects with me in a sandwich size ziplock bag. I love these little projects that fit in my purse, and where every I am. If I have to wait I can just pull them out and work on them.

  • FO a crocheted drawstring purse

  • WIP Bottle/Can Cozy

  • FO Illustrations for my Sunday School's bullentin board

This is pretty much it for this week. I had so much school work this week and worring about my dad worked together to make me not want to even think about creating.

I hope that you all have a wonderful weekend. I will return with some inspiration next week hopefully as I am going to the Apparel Mart in Atlanta and I will try to come back with some new ideas to share.

Computer Problems and more

My computer crashed Sunday morning, I lost all of my data and all of my school work. I had to take the computer into the shop for a couple of days and had no access to the internet until late tuesday night. I will say that without the computer I got a few things done. When the computer is around I seem to keep it in my lap (no pun intended). I started making me a pair of fingerless gloves and then the girls wanted a pair also so without a computer I got a lot done, One pair for me and a pair each for the girls.

Here is one of mine, I used Lorna's Laces Sock Yarn, I crocheted them in half double crochet and made up the pattern as I went I am in the process of writing it and I will be posting this pattern here as soon as it is finished.

Here is the girls showing off their's the pink, brown and yellow, is Anastasia's and was made with All Things Heather in the Banana Split Colorway. and the Blue and Yellow, is Shae's and is made with Knit Picks Sock Memories in Pansy.

Shae liked her's so much that she had to sleep with them on. I really am going to have to make sure that I turn the computer off more often and try to get some real work done. I will try to post more often and I get a few more finished objects to actually post them instead of gifting them before I get a chance to take a picture. I have gotten hooked (pun intended) on crochet, but I am still a knitter at heart. I am planning a project from an old Elizabeth Zimmerman Pattern, I need a baby blanket for a friend and I would like to get it finished before the baby is born. I hope that you all are doing great out there, I would love to hear how your week has went.
I also forgot to list who one the contest a few weeks back. Linda, of Altered Visions, I will be sending you package , all I need is your address. Email me at kates.1021 AT yahoo DOT com .

Another late night post

I have been making the Coffee Cup Cuffs from Art Quilting Magazine and I have been using pre-quilted fabric for a quicker project. I have now made about a dozen and I am planning on giving them out at the school to some of my favorite PTO and office workers. They were very easy to make and I think that I will make a few more because I have a lot of pre-quilted fabric that is just small sample size pieces and I can make a few of them. I also have figured that you can get 4 out of 1/8 yard of pre-quilted fabric and this would be a very inexpensive gift to start making to add to my gift closet.
I have been making kits for the presentation that I am doing at My Daughter's school and I hope that I will be able to sell some of the supplies that I have put together. While I was doing this I thought of an Idea that I might use for a home party idea.
I also have my resume out at 7 places now and I hope that I wll hear from one of them soon.

Here is what I do

I tought I would write a post about school. I am taking Architectual Programming and my main project for this class is a Pediactrics Office. It is 1755 Sq feet. I created a bubble diagram which is one of the first steps in the design process.
  • The sick waiting is larger than the well because most Dr.'s take a sick child every 15 min and well appointments are only scheduled every 30 min so there is always more sick than well at any given time.

  • The Reception and check out are connected with the business office and file room for easy access to the files for the check-in person.

  • The Nurses station in located beside a restroom because there needs to be a pass through for specimen collection.

  • The storage needs to be in a centrally located area for easy access of all needed supplies.

  • The Dr.'s offices are located toward the rear to offer privacy.

  • A U-shaped hall system sets up for easy access that the clients with enter one way and exit the other. It will also ease congestion at the call-back door.

  • A second restroom is in the rear of the practice and will include a shower. It will be set aside as staff only.

  • The Exam rooms are located on the perimeter of the building to make it easier for the traffic flow and keep the sound ebbed.

School starts soon.

I will be starting school in January to finish my BA in interior design. I will be looking for job so that I can gain on job knowledge. I hope to get to post a few of my drawing as the weeks progress. I look forward to this quarter because I will be studing the organization behind the design and human factors that impact each and every space that we live, breath, and work in.
